Tom Rankin Photographs, 1980-2008.

Collection consists of black and white prints from Rankin's work documenting the American South, particularly religious sites, rituals, and communities in Mississippi Delta region. A collection of these photographs was published in Sacred Space: Photographs from the Mississippi Delta, 1993. Other prints portray sites in Arles, France; another series portrays Mississippi writer Larry Brown. Formats include contact prints and large format prints. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Larry Brown was born in 1951 in Oxford, Miss. He briefly attended the University of Mississippi, but did not graduate. Brown served in the United States Marine Corps, 1970-1972, then worked as a firefighter for the Oxford Fire Department, 1973-1990. While a firefighter, Brown began to write fiction.
